What to do?
Sep 16th
I walk out of the Blue Moose, a cafe where I’ve been using the wifi while I wait on my dsl to be installed, and what do I see? The Girls Gone Wild tour bus parked right in front of me. Apparently the University of West Virginia is the number 2 party school in the country, so they were filming at a club next door.
So the natural question came to mind, should I go?
I decided no. The girls hanging around looked so young, I decided I wasn’t interested. Now if their moms had been there, I’d have been there in a New York minute. Another sign I’m getting old.
there's cold, and then there is COLD

I moved into my new place in Morgantown on Wednesday when electricity was finally turned on, but unbeknownst to me, my hot water heater uses gas. The gas company needs access to the basement, which means the landlord needs to be here. And he is harder to get on the phone than I used to be, which I didn’t think was possible.
Anyway, I have no hot water. But I took cold showers all the time in Texas this summer. The temperature was in the 90′s or 100′s most days, and a cold shower felt great. So I jumped right into a cold shower here in West Virginia. A cold shower in Texas is not the same as a cold shower in the mountains of West Virginia. The temperature had to be at least 20 degrees colder than what I was used to.
I’ve always thought that cold doesn’t bother me. I’ve gone downhill skiing in Vermont wearing a t-shirt. The only time I’ve been cold enough to complain and want to get indoors immediately was at my Uncle’s funeral in New Hampshire in early January (when the wind chill was at -20°F).
But that shower was cold! I’ve never seen myself turn blue before.
Back in the Swing of Things

The last few years have been pretty bad. Lots of health problems, and I haven’t been able to work much at all. Just a few consulting jobs to pay the rent and medical bills. But things are looking up.
I’m starting a new business with some friends who are taking care of stuff so I can do what I do best — develop software and write. In the two weeks since we decided to go ahead with this, I feel like I’ve already done more work than I did for Runtime Labs the last two years.
We’re still working on a logo, but we’ve already got 9 products we hope to release in the next year, At least 4 of those should be released this year. Some are freeware, some are open source. We’re targeting the Mac, iPhone, and iPad.
At the same time, I’m moving from Texas to Morgantown, West Virginia. Things are pretty hectic with the move & setting up the business. We’ve already got a U-Haul reserved for the end of the month and I’ve got a living room full of empty boxes to fill.
I haven’t felt this psyched and motivated in over five years. Great things are coming!
